From Georgia Straight
Vancouver public art gets
an international shout-out

Several of Vancouver's outdoor sculptures have made it into a feature at the Guardian on the best and worst public art from around the world. And don't worry—a few of our pieces are being tagged, in this readers' poll, as the best, along with showstopping pieces from Amsterdam to Prague. All of the local mentions originated with the Vancouver Biennale. Amid the ones named: Human Structures, by Jonathan Borofsky, with a reader noting the interlocking, multicoloured figures suggest "diversity and connectivity". It sits along the south False Creek bike path near Olympic Village. Read more: Vancouver public art gets an international shout-out | Georgia Straight Vancouver's News

Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition
Letter to Mayor and Council

Dear Mayor McKay and City Councillors,
Last September when you took part in the Veloworks Conference in Vancouver, we spoke at length about transportation and the need for a change in Nanaimo with the Nanaimo Transportation Master Plan that was adopted a few months earlier in hand. Since then it has been very, very quiet on the vision and plans for transportation in Nanaimo except on the transportation of water over, under or through the dams. Also very important.
Around the time of the municipal elections, the BC government announced its ideas on transportation with the B.C. Master Transportation plan and we were so lucky to be allowed to comment on the plan and make suggestions. On that front we, the Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition and the BC Cycling Coalition, have some good news to report!

From Project for Public Spaces — Reimagining Our Streets as Places:
From Transit Routes to Community Roots

In a city the street must be supreme. It is the first institution of the city. The street is a room by agreement, a community room, the walls of which belong to the donors, dedicated to the city for common use. Its ceiling is the sky. Today, streets are disinterested movements not at all belonging to the houses that front them. So you have no streets. You have roads, but you have no streets.– Louis Kahn, The Street.
